HALLUM
The information on Martha Porter led to additional searches and more new
information was uncovered. I found a web site that had information on Joseph
Smith's ancestors and another site for the Hallums. I have had an extensive
exchange of e-mail messages with Edith Griffin regarding the Hallums, who also
were her ancestors. She authored a Chapter on the Hallum Family in a book on
"Randolph Hawkins." Edith sent me a copy of a very informative write-up, i.e.,
what I believe to be draft revision of the Hallum chapter, with wills and
general historical comments. Family lore has 2 Hallum brothers, a Thomas and
William, coming from England about 1700 and settling initially in Maryland on
the Eastern Shore. Their connection to a William Hallum who died in Pendleton
Co., SC in 1782, has not been proved. However, Edith provided a copy of this
William's will. It shows that he first married a Sallie Reed, daughter of Thomas
Reed, and after her death married a widow Jennie Griffith. This Jennie's maiden
name is believed to have been Prater. One daughter of William and Sallie was
Elizabeth Hallum and she is my line to the Hallum family. Elizabeth married a
Joseph Smith. I combined Edith's information with mine and pushed my knowledge
of these families back another couple of generations.
